Eclectic Creations ***Tomingo***

Today I have a great interview for you guys. As you know I love meeting new naturals and hearing their stories. I love when they are finding ways to empower natural women and support one another. It was a pleasure talking to Tomingo of Electic Creations.

The journey ....

     ......and it continues.....

What inspired you to go natural?

My hair was damaged from over relaxing and it was thin. Then I noticed my mothers’ hair, who is still relaxing her hair, and her line is further back then it use to be.

What products do you use?

I use Jam for my afro puff, Eco-styler when I do a wash and go and Sauve as a co-wash. I also use some home-made products shea butter and natural oils. I had thought about selling them on my web-site www.eclecticreations.com , but right now I am just offering my jewelry there. I love making jewelry almost as much as I love playing in my hair! I can also be found on Etsy.

Your color is amazing, what do you use?

I use a developer with a booster to lighten my hair, usually as high as 40. Then I use a bright red with a booster. Sometimes I mix colors to see what I will get.
Crazy but I only color my hair once a year.

Do you do protective styling?

Not really. I am bad at that. Because I play in my hair so much…the style would not last.

What do you enjoy the most about natural?

How gorgeous my hair looks and feels and when the sun hits it just right it glistens…The styles I can do with it. I have found that my hair looks better natural with a weave blended in then it did when I relaxed it. To me this was amazing because all this time I have been trying to get the perfect weave spending $40-$50 in supplies that my hair does NATURALLY and it’s FREE!

Naturals have a great support system, what was yours?

Mi familia…they have always been supportive both my daughters are natural and my step-daughter has locs she has been natural for over 3 years now…

What would you say to someone who wants to go natural but is scared?

It is hard for me to answer this question because I did not care what other people thought. I do not understand the fear of just being you.

Do you remember the first time you went outside with your natural hair, big chop etc, what was the experience like (people reactions, or family members)?

They loved it. I can honestly say that I have not had any negative experiences from my journey. I do realize that my journey is not like some other naturals whom are experiencing negative feedback because they are natural. However, I do understand it.

Where do you see the natural movement heading to with youtube and social media?

It’s amazing how many new naturals I have seen since I went natural 19 months ago. I love it. I truly believe it will be an accepted option for sista’s and that soon it will be the norm.

Are you ever tempted to revert back to a perm or etc?

Excuse my French but HELL NAW!! I realize now that I did over process my hair and even though I could space my relaxer out if I wanted to, I don’t feel the need too. I can blow dry and flat iron my hair and you would think it was a fresh relaxer. I put the first relaxer in my hair at the age of 15 and off and on for over 20 years. I used chemicals to alter the texture of my hair from a Jheri Curl to a Gentle Treatment Regular and “I will never go back to the creamy crack!”

when did you fall in love with you hair?

As soon as I cut it! I loved my curls!

Add anything else you would like to say!!! website, facebook, etc

I have a website @ www.eclecticreations.com
and @ http://www.etsy.com/shop/Mingz.

I also love to blog www.peaceloveandoliveoil.blogspot.com

I also have a facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Eclectic-Creations/108982632496903

Thanks so much for asking me to do this interview...this is my first, of many i hope and really enjoyed participating.

Secrets of Cod liver Oil: Beautiful Hair and Skin

source: photographed by tarrice love

Winter is here and a great way to help our bodies and hair is to consume cod liver oil that is of course contributed by eating healthy.
Benefits of Cod liver oil: the brain, the heart, the joints, the digestive system,

Another benefit of Cod liver Oil is the Vitamin E content which helps the body process the fatty acids is an essential antixoidant and promotes the health of skin and the hair. Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be produced by the body so cod liver oil is a great supplement.
Examples of omega-3 foods:  extra virgin oil, organic butter, coconut oil, and avocados

What is more important is the type of fat you put into yur body and these are all great ways to replace the unwanted fats.
Saturated fats is not the enemy in fact they offer a number of health benefits, coconut oils is a particularly healthy choice. Trans-fatty acids are much worse for you than saturated fats. They raise your  cholesterol levels and lower good cholesterol which is linked to heart disease.
Benefits of Cod Liver oil for you hair:

Cod liver oil improves and sustains overall health because of this it will result in healthier looking hair. It contans high levels of vitamin A and D. Omega 3 acids can be found in soybeans, certain types of nuts and seeds. It provides nourishment to the follicles which speeds up hair growth and prevents hair loss. You should also consume agood supply of proteins to encourage hair growth.

You will notice a difference in the look and feel of your hair after a priod of taking cod liver oil, hair will be stronger, more durable, shinier, manageable and your hair shaft will be smoother
Other benefits:
heart disease, cancer, depression, arthritis, alzheimer's disease, ulcers, diabee, hyperactivity and many other. Increase your ability to concentrate and energy level.

Deja Vu Spotlight - Tasheia KinkCurly Dunn (FroTastic Tresses)

Lately I have been so busy an trying to keep up with everything but am trying my best. I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Tasheia Kinkcurly Dunn-FroTastic Tresses. I love the work that she is doing to empower and educate naturals. It is very inspiring and am happy to share with you.

 1) what inspired you to start and join this movement of naturals?

My inspiration to be a voice in this movement was due to me having many questions that had a variety of unclear answers and having the desire to help others that were searching just like I was to narrow down regimens, advice and styles for their hair. I also wanted to develop a group that focused on inspiration first. I found it hard to get support from those who did not understand my choice to go back natural, so I wanted to create an environment that would make every woman in my group feel like the beautiful queen that she is.

2) what do you hope to accomplish with FROTASTIC?

Frotastic Tresses was formed to empower, encourage and educate ourselves and others (creamy crack users) on the benefits of being a Kinky Curly Coily Woman.
I hope to accomplish an enviornment of knowledge and inspiration.
Our Moto is: Embracing our Natural FroTastic Tresses in all of it's GLORY.
Ultimately I want to start a line of Inspirational Tee’s that flow along with our Tresses!
But if one person walks away feeling beautiful and lifted up, I will feel accomplished.

3) when did you decided to go natural?

I originally started the natural hair wear in the summer of 98. I had just graduated from high school and went off to college. I already wore my hair really short and just needed something with lower maintenance. For my freshman year I kept a TWA and loved it. I came home in 99 (back to GA) and it really wasn’t received well by my friends and some family members so I went back, temporarily to the perm a.k.a creamy crack.
While I maintained the perm look I felt it needed some spunk after a recent perm. I decided to allow my cousin, who was an aspiring hair dresser to color it for me. Well when I went to the bowl to wash my shoulder length hair, it came out by the handfuls! I was devastated and vowed never to put a perm in my hair ever again. I have been Natural ever since.

4) What is your hair regimen like?

My hair regimen is fairly simple but varies depending on the time of year.

5) What are some of your favs products?

My glamour room must haves would have to be Miss. Jessies Curly Pudding, Smooth n Shine Curl Gel, Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie and Crème of Nature dry hair systems or shampoos and conditioners.

6) What is your best protective style?

Puff has to be my most favorite protective style, If I had to pick a second it would be twists or braids

7) When did you fall in love with your hair?

I fell in love with my hair about 5 months ago, that’s when I looked at myself in the mirror. I make it a point to fall in love with myself and my natural hair every time I’m in front of a mirror ;-)

8) What inspires you the most about having natural hair?

My inspirations come from the Bonds that are created by a smile or a glance from that sistah with locs or a fro that you pass and give that sorority type acknowledgement…
Second inspiration is how I feel about myself and how much I am in tune with me know. Being natural has brought about a new wave of how I treat and view myself.

9) If you could give advice to anyone wanting to go natural and not sure where to start what advice can you offer them?

I would encourage anyone thinking of transitioning to talk to people that are inspirational and knowledgeable about natural hair. Visit a natural hair care salon and speak with a stylist that is willing to give a consultation and inform them of their options while transitioning. And give them my Frotastic Tresses Facebook page to stay connected with positive people who are just like her.

10) There are many women going natural where do you think this is going to take us as black women?

This natural hair movement is taking us as ethnic women to a level of power that we are tapping into and makes us thirst and hunger for truth in our souls, spirit, and mind.
Its making us more aware of self love and self respect. We are soaring into a higher realm of who we are and that’s Strong, Beautiful, Intelligent Vessels. Its Awesome

Make sure your makeup ist to obvious, or to heav, you want founation close to skin tone, and that will giveyou that natural look you desire. When you have a great foundation you can cover up breakouts and under eye circle. You want to choose the right foundation by choosing to match yor undertone so whether it is dark, olive or pink it will match your skin. Always apply to your cheek near your jawline not your hand an always test in natural light.

Always wash your face and hands before apply your makeup and apply a light moisturizer, this will lay down a nice base for you foundation. Apply your concealer after your foundation to cover up acne and blend the edges onto the foundation.

Tps to remember
- clean your makeup brusches every week or if you have spare time every da

Vitamins: All thats good for your Hair

Lately I have been very intrigued by what eating health and pay attention to my body will lead to. I Know I discuss a lot about paying attention to your hair but just imagine how much the both work hand in hand. Our bodies allow the function, the growth and the health of our hair to be possible. I am currently on my way to a healthy lifestyle and thought I give you a push to help you achieve the same of course that doesn’t mean you need to just give up everything but stay conscious of what your body needs.
Hair loss: When there is a deficiency of B vitamins; B6, biotin, inositol and folic acid, this leads to hair loss. Our bodies crave vitamins to function and to be healthy.
Specific hair growth vitamins: B5 (pantothenic acid), B3 (niacin) these are natural specific sources just for hair growth.
Vitamin A
It is an antioxidant which aids in the making of healthy sebum in the scalp. It is also a fat soluble, disposing of any excesses taken in through diet in much harder form.
Food sources: fish, liver oil, meat, milk, cheese, eggs, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, apricots, peaches, kale, pumpkin, egg, mango, milk, cantaloupe melon and papaya
Toxicity: When taken in high doses Vitamin A toxicity such as  excess alcohol intake can lead to nausea, jaundice, irritability, anorexia (not the eating disorder), vomiting, blurry vision, headaches, weakness and drowsiness. Stay away from excess alcohol intake as well.
Vitamin C
They work towards maintaining hair health. It is antioxidant since it protects the body against oxidative stress and also acts as a pro-oxidant.
Food sources: citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi, cantaloupe, pineapple, tomatoes, and dark green vegetables.
Toxicity: When taken in high doses may cause indigestion and also causes diarrhoea, iron poisoning.
Vitamin E
It helps in improving the scalp circulation. It is a fat soluble antioxidant that stops the production of reactive oxygen species formed when fat underdoes oxidation.

Food sources: vegetable oils, wheat germ oil, soybeans, raw seeds, nuts, dried beans, pumpkin, mangoes, sweet potato, broccoli, and leafy green vegetables.

Toxicity: It is recommended that you do not over dose on vitamin E

Biotin

It works as an anti-aging agent by preventing greying of hair and hair loss. It is necessary for call growth, the production of fatty acids, the metabolism of fats and amino acids. Biotin also assists in various metabolic reactions and the transfer of carbon dioxide. Biotin deficiency is rare because our intestinal bacteria produce biotin in excess of the body’s daily requirements.

Food sources: whole grains, egg yolks, rice, milk and supplements

Toxicity: Biotin deficiency can be caused by the excessive consumption of raw eggs. This can cause hair loss (alopecia), conjunctivitis, dermatitis and neurological symptoms.

Inositol
It helps in keeping hair follicles healthy. It plays a major role in preventing the collection of fats in the liver. While doing some research I came across a few articles and people that said that using Inositol to treat cancer has help them and continued to do so well into and after their treatments.
Food sources: whole grains, liver, citrus fruits, red beans, kidney beans, and oranges,
Toxicity: Lack of Inositol can lead to constipation, high cholesterol, problems with visions, and hair loss
Niacin
It aids in promoting scalp circulation. It is one of the 8 water soluble vitamins, and is used to produce energy.
Food sources: wheat germ, fish, chicken, turkey, and meat
Toxicity: Niacin toxicity happens when it is taken in mega doses some side effects include skin flushing, itching, dry skin, skin rashes. Alcoholism is the main cause of niacin deficiency.
Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)
It helps in preventing greying and hair loss. It is a water soluble vitamin and helps to convert food to energy, improves the body’s resistance to stress, fighting infections by building antibodies, reduces the effect of environmental damages and improves skin condition and hair.
Food sources: whole grain cereals, organ meats, egg yolks, avocados, multi-vitamins,
Toxicity: It is rare to be pantothenic deficient however it is seen in victims of starvation.
Vitamin B6
Prevents hair loss and is a water soluble vitamin part of the vitamin B complex group. It is key nutrient that they body needs to break down proteins, carbohydrates and fats in food for healthy blood, skin and nerves.
Food sources: Brewer’s yeast, liver, whole grain cereals, vegetables, organ meats, bananas, legumes, and egg yolks.
Toxicity: Vitamin B6 over consumption result in painful and ultimately irreversible neurological problems, pain, numbness and difficulty walking.
Vitamin B12
Prevents Hair loss, is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the formation of blood. It is involved in the metabolism of every cell in the human body.
Food sources: chicken, fish, eggs, yeast and milk
Toxicity: Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause irreversible damage to the brain and nervous system. You can experience fatigue, depression, poor memory
Keep in mind I did not include the negative side effects to scare you away from eating helps or taking multi-vitamins. I did this because I want you to be aware not to over dose thinking if you take more your hair will grow more. Take the recommended dosage and consult your doctor always.

Getting Rid of Dark Spots (Part 1)

Over the past week I really needed a break to just write some new material so I have been posting here and there but I just had to breathe for a minute. I was also tired and ill so I needed much rest. It was so nice to receive email asking if I am okay, thank you guys made my days. I am back now and have some great material for you guys to come and great giveaways. Am Excited!!. I try to answer questions I am asked and also share what I am currently researching. I came up with a few tips, advice, and home remedies to get rid of those stubborn dark spots. The reason being even though my skin has cleared from the acne, it is taking a long time for my dark spots to go away. Now they aren’t as visible as I may lead you to believe. I don’t have that much, however, looking at my face I can see them. If you’re like me and on this journey for a beautiful healthier you it will bother you the way it bothers me.
In my label entitled SKIN CARE  I discuss ExfoliationFace care: Acne, Oily Skin, I briefly discuss dark spots. If you’re having problems getting rid of acne that could be a number of reasons why I advise to refer to the past article where I also briefly discuss dark spots In this article I will go into more detail about dark spots in his article and so much more to come
We all want a smooth, even and clear complexion. Although you may be cleansing your skin often, it does not prevent hyper-pigmentation or dark spots. Dark spots are characterized by pockets of discoloured skin that remain even after pimples have disappeared. It can be caused by internal or external factors, illness or hepatic problems.
Causes:
·       Iron
·       Hormonal changes during pregnancy
·       Menopause
·       Deficiency in certain vitamins
·       Minerals (such as calcium)
·       Increase In melanin (occurs after the skin is inflamed or irritated
·       Over exposure to the sun.

Many dermatologists suggest that you consult with your dermatologist to make sure that your spots are benign before applying creams or sun block. For others, a skin peel may also be required. I have never done this myself but that is what is recommended for some cases. Dark spots can be remedied at home as well.
Tips to get rid for those persistent dark spots:
·       Sunscreen daily with SPF 15 or higher (use sunscreen to block the sun that darkens the skin, and prevent skin cancer)
·       Leave your face alone, do not pick at pimples or zits, this will cause scarring
·       Drink lots of fluid and water
·       Eat foods such as; cucumbers, lemons, tomatoes, and oranges, these help in purifying the blood and removing toxins from the body.
·       Exfoliate the skin at least once or twice a week

Remedies:
Flaxseed oil is a great supplement it is rich in vitamin E and boosts blood flow and circulation to support healthy skin cell growth.
Chamomile and lemon juice are natural bleaching agents and will lighten the dark acne spots. You can use chamomile tea bags and add lemon juice, refrigerate the solution every time you use it. Do not keep each batch of solutions for more than 2 weeks. This can be used as often as desired.
Vitamin E oil is a personal favourite; apply this after your chamomile and lemon juice solution. Vitamin E encourages cell regeneration, vitamin E can be thick and oily so it is best absorb at night. Massage your dark spot for about 1 minute, this will help your body absorb the oil and circulate new skin cell growth under the scars.
Makeup:

This was actually suggested by a makeup artist for those of you with dark spots, acne or freckles.
Freckles-select a foundation that is as dark as the freckles, however you can get a masked look so even though it is not the most recommended some prefer to do this.
Select a sheer foundation you can see some of your skin through, get a colour of your freckles, or spots and colour of your tone, this will give you a clean look and won’t appear ashy.
Remember that you have to care for your skin as much as you care for your natural hair, yes it requires the same amount of work to maintain healthy glowing skin.

Fall Fashion Classics

Fashion classics are things that never go out of style, especially when you have a great sense of fashion you're able to included them in your closet time and time again. I have pulled together some great fall finds. Enjoy!!

Fitted Jacket

These can be found @ H&M
Fitted jackets are always a great way to dress up or to dress down. If you're looking for a clean classic look a fitte jacket is great to throw over any great outfit. Try them in colours to it's alot of fun to try a new look, you'll be surprise how much it works for you.

Pant Suit: Now this is not just for your 9 to 5. A great suit not just black but mix and matc your colour, with great tailouring and a unique flare can give a great polish, or fun look for fall. Whats great about a great pant suit is the blazer there are so many ways to wear a blazer and for me always been a must have in my closet. Blazer are great for great for a night out to dinner, pair it with some accessories, nice pair of jeans, r cute dress, skirt and a top, a cute pair of pumps and your out the door. Nowadays there are so many variations of the pant suit it is freshing and fun.

Neutral Coat: This classic can go with anything in your closet and your bound to find on at a great price. There are so many styles and varations to coats now that you can be classic and timeless or just fun and funky.

Plaid is great fall classic, now not everyone can get away with plaid but if done the right way it can be something to add to your closet for a long time. A great plaid jacket is a great way to make it a staple in your closet or a pair of tights (try clothes that arent to bright but add just the right amount of flare ot your outfit. Keep in mind that plaid can be done very loud or very quiet, so choose wisely and what suits you best.

Christian Louboutin Suede Boots go forabout 215$. You can find a pair like these at stores like aldo, le chateau and many other carry the variations of these.

When it comes to winter and fall, I must admit I have an obsession for tal boots around this time. I enjoy wearing them and try different colour and styles to ompliment my outfit. They never go out of style and you can always pull them back out and wer them again. It just make sense to have tall boots because you can pair them with anything from jeans to even a dress.

Pearls

Accessories can make any outfit stand out. Pearls are a great way to keep a classic more structured look elegant. You can try black pearls, grey or your classic colour. I really love the way they layered the pearls.

  Large Bags
this bag is by gucci a great piece   These are from Christian Dior
and the colour is so beautiful

If you want something more affordable try aldo, forever21, H&M. They carry different styles nd variations and the pric is reasonable ranging from 19$ and up, if there is a sale sometimes even less.

Oscar de la RentaWhether they are leather or just anything the caugth your bags these can carry from summer to fall. A great bag is a timeless piece and can compliment any outfit. I love bags and enjoy something different and something unique, so i tend to search high and low for new pieces to add to my wardrobe.

How to care for your weave

i love this pic
source: blackgirlsrock

How to care for your weave
This winter I have decided upon two styles weaves and twists as my protective styling options. Currently I am wearing a weave and I really like it. I got a kinky afro weave that I must admit looks really nice. I prefer to protect my hair in winter because it gets so dry when left out. I know many naturals choose to do the same, I have complied some tips that will help you maintain your tresses and also have fun.
It is important that as naturals we pay special attention and care to our scalp and avoid any risks of damaging our natural hair.
Step 1:  Choosing your weave
When I first decided to put in a weave as always I thought about what style would not only compliment my face but something I would enjoy having in. I had done the afro kinky weave once but did not enjoy. I decided to try it once again and do it about above my shoulders. I love it!
Step 2: Synthetic and natural weave
When choosing between the two if you are going for more of a natural look, choose a natural weave. This will also depend on your lifestyle. I prefer to use synthetic hair if I want length on my twist or am doing braids. However, I do not keep my braids in for long as i have notice the chemicals used in these braids irritate my scalp immensely. When I spoke to a few natural ladies they said the same but there are those you have no problem with it.
Step 3: How much are you willing to spend
How much you’re willing to spend will also determine the quality of hair and the look you want to achieve There are many cheap versions that do wonders and give you your desired style. Human hair, specifically Indian Remy can be very expensive. I prefer to use this because I know I will be using it more than once and love the look and feel of it.
Step 4: Finding a Hairdresser
Finding a hairdresser can take time; look for a knowledgeable hairdresser that specializes in natural hair. I say this because they will be able to care for your natural hair and give you tips and advice you can follow up with and do your own research to have the best results with your hair.
Step 5: Choose a Method to apply the hair
You can apply your weave by using glue, heat fusion, or sewing, braided, and bonded
Braided weave is braided along your scalp and should not be noticeable. Make sure to use heavy weaving thread to have a proper hold on your weave. The number of braided rows depends on your personal preference or your stylist. You want to be able to clean your scalp, manage your weave and stimulate hair growth in the process. Weaves can last a very long time, I tend to leave mind for the most 3weeks to a month. I like being able to deep conditioning, and do all my treatments and I tend to miss my hair.
I do not recommend using adhesive on your hair personally however many do use it. This is done by applying adhesive to the natural hair near the scalp. This can be very harmful to your natural hair, and you may be allergic to some adhesive. Make sure to test any chemical you use before apply to your scalp on a small patch of skin. I would advise you have your bonded weave remove by a professional to avoid and damage. Fusion weaves are done using hot wax, I have not tried this method but this does give your hair a more natural look, because your hair appears to be growing from the scalp.

Step 6: Caring for the weave
Care for your weave as if it is your natural hair. Wash your hair and weave, your weave can become brittle and dry because it is not attached to your head and cannot receive and of the body’s naturally nourishing oils. Our natural hair can also become dry and brittle if it is not washed, conditions and moisturized on a regular basis. Make sure to clean your scalp and deep condition your hair. Be careful if you choose to blow dry and curl your natural weave.

What to know
Always wash your hair and deep conditioning it before apply an extensions to your hair, make sure to pay special care to your ends
Apply your extensions loose not to pull at your edges or cost pre-mature balding
Comb through your weaves using your fingers
Make sure weaves are not too heavy on your scalp
The advantage of having a weave is your ends are protected; chemicals aren’t being used or heat.
Use oil around the braided areas to prevent the hair becoming dry and brittle
If you burn the extensions or cause damage it will remain the same until it is removed or cut.
If you do not care for your weave it will develop split ends, and unmanageable
Weaves can also collect bacteria; it is also a foreign object.
Always check to make sure your hair is not being damage by the weave especially if you want long tresses.
